MichaelSerge Holiday Series – Unforgettable souvenirs from European countries.

The Roman philosopher and writer Seneca the Younger divided travelers into two groups. The first are those who want to escape problems and worries. The second group consists of people who travel out of genuine curiosity about the world. They have a specific purpose, discover foreign cultures, and traverse the world to gain knowledge, not to escape from themselves.

During the holiday season, European countries receive a huge number of tourists. There will undoubtedly be many people among them from both of the above-mentioned groups. Regardless, however, of which one we identify with, the memories we bring back from our travels often remain in our minds for the rest of our lives.

What reminds us of beautiful moments are also souvenirs – often very personal items that we bring with us in our suitcase. Material things can have great personal, symbolic, and even spiritual significance. They remind us of happiness, important changes in life, growth, gaining knowledge, and discovering new paths.

We will begin our holiday journey with MichaelSerge in Portugal, a country located at the southwestern edge of Europe. A country bordered on one side by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and on the other by Spain.

While in this picturesque place, it is worth buying beautiful cork products – shoes, handbags, or hats. The lightness and comfort of this material are not everything. The original design and vibrant colors will remain for a long time in the colorful palette of our memories.

And what does the rooster have to do with the Portuguese?

This folkloric symbol, associated with good fortune and justice, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Portuguese folk culture. At market stalls, you will find figurines, mugs, or beautiful tablecloths with an embroidered image of the rooster. Invite the rooster of good fortune into your home and let it stay with you for longer.

Among the most beautiful souvenirs brought back from Portugal are invariably original patterns inspired by azulejos – characteristic Portuguese ceramic tiles. These motifs can be found on jewelry – earrings, pendants, and bracelets. Handbags, key rings, or wallets with a tile motif make beautiful accessories for both women’s and men’s wardrobes.

Kitchen boards or napkins with blue-and-white patterns will be the perfect complement to any kitchen. Cooking surrounded by such a rich palette of colors can inspire the preparation of many a Mediterranean dish.

Let us not forget, however, that Portugal is above all a country located on the Atlantic Ocean.

For centuries, the Portuguese have been and still are connected with the sea – distant, mysterious, and full of unknown expanses. The history of this country is inseparably linked with navigation, shipbuilding, and great sea voyages.

Sailors used compasses and astrolabes. They explored the world and used the knowledge they gained to find the right direction and safely traverse the distant waters of the Atlantic.

Sea voyages changed the world and the way reality was perceived. The development of navigation allowed people to discover new lands, learn about other cultures, and create new trade routes.

Who among us has not heard of the voyages of Vasco da Gama? This Portuguese sailor and explorer went down in history as the first European to reach India from Europe by sea, sailing around the southern tip of Africa. His expedition became one of the most important events of the Age of Discovery.

It is worth remembering, however, that the first voyage to circumnavigate the world was connected with Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, which began in 1519. Magellan himself did not complete the journey – he died in the Philippines – and the expedition was completed by the crew led by Juan Sebastián Elcano.

Today, we can preserve memories in the form of beautiful, unique souvenirs. When we are far from our beloved seaside towns, we can also choose items that will remind us of the sea, travel, and discovering the world.

Beautiful compasses, sextants, and model ships can become exceptional souvenirs for those who love maritime atmospheres and distant journeys.

The store MichaelSerge.com offers a wide range of nautical products, where one can find items inspired by the history of navigation and great discoveries.

Adding an engraving makes such an item even more personal. It can be a souvenir of a specific journey, an important date, a special place, or a symbol of one’s own path. A personal amulet for the onward journey – not only the maritime one, but also the spiritual one.
