Every year in December, the same thought arises: who really was Saint Nicholas? Where did the custom of giving gifts come from, and does this figure have anything in common with travelers, to whom we dedicate engraved compasses, sextants, or clocks? It turns out that... he has quite a lot in common!

The historical Nicholas—the man who turned legend into tradition

The real St. Nicholas truly existed. He was born around the year 270 in Patara, and later became the bishop of Myra—a port city located on the coast of present-day Turkey. He was known for his generosity, helping the poor, and for often doing so anonymously.

It is from his gestures that the tradition of leaving gifts originated, and later—the celebration of St. Nicholas' Day.

Could Nicholas have been a traveler?

Although we usually imagine him in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, the historical Nicholas lived in a region where travel was an everyday occurrence. Myra was an important trading port, regularly visited by merchants and sailors from various parts of the world.

It is worth adding that, according to legend, Nicholas saved sailors during a storm at sea. This event made him recognized to this day as the patron of travelers, sailors, and explorers.

It can therefore be said with confidence that the spirit of travel was very close to him.

Nicholas—a symbol of journey and bringing good

The modern legend of Nicholas, who visits the whole world in one night, is of course a beautiful story, but also a metaphor for something deeper—the journey, discovery, and reaching those who are waiting for a bit of goodness.

It is no wonder, then, that his image resonates so strongly with people who love distant journeys, sailing, maps, navigational instruments, and everything related to exploring the world.

Nicholas and traditions that have survived the centuries

For over 1,700 years, the figure of Nicholas has undergone transformations. In various cultures, his story was combined with local customs, until the present image was created—a smiling old man who not only gives gifts but also inspires kindness, courage, and looking "beyond."

And although today it is difficult to separate fact from legend, one thing remains certain: Nicholas has become a symbol that brings warmth, hope, and a touch of adventure.

Why is Nicholas associated with travelers?

For his story fits perfectly into what explorers and discoverers love:

  • wandering despite difficulties,

  • courage in the face of the unknown,

  • bringing good to others,

  • openness to the world and to people.

These are values that connect generations and create the atmosphere of the holidays—a time when we are more likely to reach for symbols of travel and items that carry a story.

An engraved keepsake for those who believe in the magic of travel

For many people, Christmas is a moment when they want to give their loved ones something meaningful. Nicholas is associated precisely with such a gift—intentional, thoughtful, and unique.

That is why items related to navigation and world exploration are so often chosen as Christmas gifts.
An engraved compass, sextant, antique clock, or decorative figurine contain exactly what Nicholas himself represented: the symbol of the journey, courage, and a heart turned toward others.

Such items not only decorate the interior—they become a keepsake that lasts for years.

Saint Nicholas is a figure who combines history, legend, and the spirit of adventure. He was a man who helped others, lived in a world full of travelers, and over time became a symbol of a great, magical journey.

Perhaps that is why he fits so well into the world of people who love to discover new places—just as he once discovered the needs of others and responded to them with kindness.
